The Love of God

O God, if I worship Thee in fear of Hell, burn me in Hell; and if I worship Thee in hope of Paradise, exclude me from Paradise; but if I worship Thee for Thine own sake, withhold not Thine evelasting beauty.

Aren't these the words of a famous female Sufi? Anyway, I have heard a Muslim Sheikh mention that, although beautiful, it is not an entirely valid appeal.

Indeed, this is the prayer of the great Sufi mystic, Rubi'a.

It's couched in a style that scandalises some. The sentiment on the other hand, rightly understood, is quite right.

The Roman Catholic Act of Contrition said at confession has a line that goes "...not because I dread the loss of heaven, or the pains of hell, but because they offend Thee..."
